Al Jazeera is a global media network headquartered in the Arab world, with more than 70 bureaus worldwide and over 3,000 employees from more than 95 countries. The organization continues to develop digital products for new generations of news consumers.

To support these digital services, internal platforms and media applications need to work together reliably, securely and at scale. For Al Jazeera’s Media Applications Team, that meant modernizing how notifications and user access were handled across different applications.

The challenge: fragmented access and notification management

Al Jazeera’s Media Applications Team managed user access and notifications across multiple applications.

Over time, each system had developed its own approach. That created operational complexity and inconsistent experiences for users.

The team faced several challenges:
  • Inconsistent user experiences caused by fragmented notification implementations
  • Increased maintenance complexity across multiple applications
  • Limited scalability when new applications or notification flows were introduced
  • Access permission errors due to insufficient default identity provider claims
  • Inefficient onboarding and offboarding processes
  • Repeated user management efforts across systems

Al Jazeera needed one centralized and scalable solution. The goal was to streamline operations, reduce complexity and improve the digital experience across its platforms.

The solution: a unified cloud-based architecture

AppyThings designed and deployed a Google Cloud Platform and Keycloak-based solution to simplify access management and standardize notification flows.

The architecture combined cloud-native services, API management and centralized identity control.

The solution included:
  • Apigee X for secure API management and integration between applications
  • Google Cloud Pub/Sub for event-driven message distribution
  • Cloud Functions for scalable processing and routing logic
  • Firebase Cloud Messaging for reliable cross-platform notification delivery
  • Keycloak with OpenID Connect and RBAC for centralized authentication and fine-grained access control
  • Reference architecture to create a scalable and standardized foundation
  • Integration engineering to ensure interoperability between systems
  • Integration consultancy to align IT systems and operational needs

Together, these components created a more unified and future-ready foundation for notifications and access management.

Event-driven notifications at scale

A key part of the solution was the move towards an event-driven notification architecture. Instead of each application managing notifications independently, events could be published, routed and distributed centrally.

This allowed Al Jazeera to:
  • Standardize notification handling across applications
  • Reduce duplicated implementation work
  • Improve reliability of notification delivery
  • Support real-time message routing
  • Scale notification flows as digital platforms evolve

By using Google Cloud Pub/Sub and Cloud Functions, the architecture became more flexible and easier to extend.

Firebase Cloud Messaging then enabled reliable delivery across different platforms and devices.

Centralized access management with Keycloak

The second major part of the solution focused on access management.

Al Jazeera needed more control than default identity provider claims could provide for its custom applications.

By implementing Keycloak with OpenID Connect and Role-Based Access Control, AppyThings created a centralized identity and access management layer.

This enabled:
  • More precise access control
  • Reduced permission errors
  • Easier onboarding and offboarding
  • Lower administrative overhead
  • Stronger security across applications
  • More consistent user management

The result was a more controlled and scalable way to manage permissions across Al Jazeera’s media applications.
